Challenges

The year 2012 will be a period of tremendous challenges for Africa's development. The economy of most African nations will continue to be a struggle if we do not join forces in the crusade to eliminate the #1 killer disease of children in Africa.

Malaria is most prevalent in the poorest countries in Africa. Not only are malarial countries poor, but economic growth in malarial countries over the past quarter century has been dismal. Malaria contributes significantly to child mortality and can cause acute disease in pregnant women. Countries that managed to reduce malaria over time have had much higher economic growth, but there is still so much more to do. Infections worldwide now number around 250 million cases a year, with almost 1 million deaths, mostly among the young in Africa.

Lack of resources such as indoor spraying treatments, medicines and mosquito nets make prevention programs a challenge. This leaves hundreds of thousands of African children at risk. You can give a child in Africa a new beginning. The time is now, the opportunity is upon us and the effort needs to be made now. Donate a Net and Save a Life!

Malaria is devastating in Africa, where it kills an African child every 45 seconds. Many children who survive an episode of severe malaria may suffer from learning impairments or brain damage. Pregnant women and their unborn children are also particularly vulnerable to malaria, which during pregnancy is a major cause of mortality, low birth weight and maternal anemia.<

Approximately 90% of malaria cases and deaths occur in Africa; This disease imposes severe economic loss in the form of lost school days for sick kids, the tourism sector suffers, low economic productivity and long-term disability from severe illnesses result.

Malaria will continue to spread until effective interventions and preventive measures increase. Until a vaccine is developed to prevent malaria, we must rely on anti-malarial medicines and insecticide-treated bed nets.

Insecticide mosquito bed nets are extremely effective in preventing malaria. The cost of these bed nets are relatively low, however, it still remains beyond the reach of the most vulnerable populations. We need the public support in getting these nets to these African families that are in desperate need. It is by far easier to stop something from happening in the first place than to repair the damage after it happens. Prevention is key. Please help us in the fight against malaria today. With only a $10 donation, a bed net can be sent to save a life.
